OhioLINK Affordable Learning & OER Initiatives

OhioLINK is currently working on affordable learning initiatives in three areas.

Awareness and Advocacy

  • Panel on Textbook Affordability at the State of the State Address. Join OhioLINK and the Ohio Department of Higher Education for a discussion on textbook affordability and open educational resources, led by an esteemed panel of experts, practitioners, and students from around the state.
  • Open Textbook Network workshops. OhioLINK joined the Open Textbook Network (OTN) and hosted a series of OTN workshops on OER textbook adoption across the state in 2017-2018. We held three workshops in November and held two more on March 15 and 16, 2018.
  • Affordable Learning AmbassadorsOur team of trained volunteers from member institutions is ready to advise on campus and library affordable learning and OER initiatives across the state. Their collective expertise in finding appropriate resources, copyright, and supporting the modification and creation of Open Education Resources can assist your campus in starting a local affordable learning initiative.
  • Ohio Affordable Learning Campus Initiatives Guide. Learn more about the affordable learning initiatives being pursued at Ohio colleges and universities. If you have a campus initiative that you'd like to promote, we'd be happy to add it; please contact Anna Bendo at abendo@ohiolink.edu.

Creation and Collaboration

  • Ohio Open Ed Collaborative: In June, 2017, North Central State College, in collaboration with Ohio State and Ohio Dominican universities, and 15 other community colleges, received an Ohio Department of Higher Education Innovation Grant in the amount of $1,300,000. The grant was awarded to support the development of open educational resources (OER) and other materials in an effort to reduce the cost of textbooks for students.
  • OER Commons: In 2018, OhioLINK will implement a branded instance of OER Commons, to host Ohio-created OER content and make curating and collaborating OER resources for Ohio-specific programs easier. The OhioLINK OER Commons is part of our support for the Ohio Higher Education Innovation grant for OER adoption and creation among 17 institutions, including the Ohio State University, Ohio Dominican University, and a coalition of community colleges under the umbrella of the Ohio Association of Community Colleges.
  • Inclusive Access Initiative: OhioLINK also issued an RFI (Request for Information) for published textbooks on the inclusive access model in November 2017 and is continuing to work on statewide efforts to drop prices for students on all textbooks.
